American Ballet Theater’s Fall Gala got a dose of megastar wattage on Wednesday night thanks in part to Natalie Portman. But the actress, clad in a Chanel dress, eschewed reporters at Avery Fisher Hall, instead opting to hang out with her companion for the evening, Mila Kunis.
Presumably, the two were there for research. Next month they will begin filming “Black Swan,” a thriller about rival ballet dancers written and directed by Darren Aronofsky.
Portman and Kunis weren’t the only big names on hand for the dance company’s season opener: Iman, Veronica Webb, Emmy Rossum (with new beau Counting Crows rocker Adam Duritz) and JoAnna Garcia of “Gossip Girl” joined ABT balletomanes such as Muffie Potter Aston, Susan Fales-Hill and Fe Fendi.
Iman, who teamed up with Webb to introduce the event’s performance, also was feeling decidedly low profile. The model reported that the last time she took the stage at an ABT event in May, she followed Michelle Obama.
“Everyone was asking, ‘What was she wearing? Was it Jason Wu?’ So the first thing I had to announce when I got on the stage was it was Azzedine Alaïa,” recalled Iman, who didn’t follow the same protocol this time around.
“People could care less about what Veronica and I were wearing,” she said. “We are no Michelle Obama.”
