Barneys New York chief executive Howard Socol was all smiles in San Francisco on Monday night as guests streamed into the handsome new Barneys store for its opening night gala. “We’ve waited many years for this moment and I could not be happier,” said Socol, who was flanked by by Julie Gilhart and Simon Doonan. “It’s all about the location. It had to be right.”

Danielle Steel knows a thing or two about waiting. Her embroidered Lacroix couture coat arrived from Paris just the day before.

“I ordered it in three colors—and was afraid none of them would arrive in time,” she said, surrounded by her daughters, Vanessa, Zara and Samantha Traina and Beatrix Seidenberg, and daughters-in-law Alexis Traina and Katie Traina.

It was something of a family affair, of course: The party benefited the Nick Traina Foundation, an organization the romance novelist founded to help fight manic depression and other forms of mental illness. (Her son Nick committed suicide in 1997 at the age of 19.)

Seven hundred guests—many of whom headed straight for the shoe department to try on the selection of Louboutins—jammed into the sold-out party, among them Denise Hale, Urannia Ristow, Vanessa Getty, and designer Isabel Toledo.
