Van Cleef & Arpels pulled out all the stops for its “Une Journée A Paris” party Tuesday night, drawing a crowd that spanned from the farthest stretches of old school socials (Audrey Gruss) to the nearest reaches of up and coming starlets (Lake Bell). Taking over the Hammerstein Ballroom for an evening that included a fashion show styled by Annabel Tollman, a performance by Lido cabaret dancers, a mini-concert by rocker chicks The Plasticines, and – in case the constant blitz of flashbulbs didn’t give it away – a graphic animation displayed on the building’s exterior declaring it as party central.
Too bad the narrow entryway and overwhelming guest response had people like Susan Fales-Hill, Liz Goldwyn, Kate and Laura Mulleavy, Jamee Gregory and Irina Lazareanu bottlenecked or locked out altogether as celebrity photo ops for Mischa Barton (who later rocked out inside while inhaling hors d’oeuvres), Vanessa Carlton, Demi Moore (accompanied by Alber Elbaz) and ever press-shy Ashley Olsen upstaged the actual party. Though said stars were happy to get in the Parisian mood.
Lake Bell was last in the City of Light for Eva Longoria’s wedding, but she recalled a more rebellious time. “I went there when I was 15 with a friend and we were chased down by weirdos,” said the New York native.
Sarah Michelle Gellar used the evening’s theme to break out an unused outfit. “I’ve had this Chanel dress for a while but never had occasion to wear it. I thought tonight was a great excuse,” she explained. “You know, they’re always talking about the romance of Paris, but the last time i was there it was a girlfriends trip and I had so much fun.”
Eve was sporting a fashion statement of a different kind, namely the now ubiquitous anklet alcohol-detector. “It comes off on September 8th. It will have been 45 days,” said the glowing singer, who was ordered to don the accessory after pleading no contest in July to a DUI. “I think I’m going to have it bronzed.”
Slightly farther downtown, there was a mood of benevolence in SoHo at Glamour’s Fashion Gives Back bash. Fashion was giving to Malaria No More, the foundationbenefited by the sale of the limited edition designer t-shirts commissioned by the magazine.
And the actresses in attendance were generously lending their presence as muses to their favorite designers. Ginnifer Goodwin arrived on the arm of Peter Som (“We bonded over burgers at Balthazar a few months ago,” Som explained), Catalina Sandino Moreno showed up on behalf of Jovovich-Hawk (though the pregnant Milla Jovovich was at home on bedrest), Joy Bryant came to party with Erin Fetherston and Emily Mortimer mingled about wearing Marchesa (“I feel like I picked the long straw,” she said of her designer pairing).
And while the celebs were more than game to be used as walking billboards, Amanda Peet, supporting her longtime pal Thakoon, approached the evening a tad reluctantly. “I say to myself, ‘I’m only going to stay for ten minutes,’ and then this happens,” she said, sounding a wee bit exasperated by the reporters with recorders and blinding flashbulbs.
Welcome to fashion week.
