The Art of Elysium’s fourth annual Heaven Gala on Saturday night had an otherworldly air in its latest venue — the hangar-like Annenberg Building at the California Science Center.
The white steel structure set the tone for Mark Mothersbaugh of Devo, this year’s ‘Visionary’ for the event. The musician-painter’s art was projected onto jumbo screens and also served as the backdrop for a raucous Devo set after dinner. The event seems to boast one of the highest retention rates in town, given that the same actors who volunteer with the kids’ non-profit, including Elijah Wood, Nicole Richie, Amy Smart, Brittany Snow and Topher Grace — keep coming back for more at the behest of chairman of the board Ryan Kavanaugh. Eva Mendes and Kirsten Dunst, past recipients of the ‘Spirit of Elysium’ award, presented it this year to James Franco. Although the actor was a bit hard to hear in the cavernous space, he referenced his harrowing role in ‘127 Hours’ saying, “it’s nothing compared to what some kids go through in the hospital.”
