Rachel Roy got the party started a little earlier than usual by hosting a celebratory dinner two days before revealing her new collection. On Sunday evening, the designer was joined by Hilary Rhoda, Chrissy Teigen, Hannah Bronfman, Gabrielle Union, Natasha Bedingfield, Margherita Missoni and Padma Lakshmi on the rooftop of the NoMad Hotel for a nearly three-hour dinner that included arctic char, lobster minestrone and chocolate tarts. The party came courtesy of Bon Appétit magazine, a new player in New York Fashion Week events (the magazine has two more parties planned this week for Chris Benz and Michael Bastian).
“I design so women can eat whatever they want and feel good about themselves,” Roy said.
“I didn’t know you had a caftan line,” quipped Laura Brown, features-special projects director at Harper’s Bazaar.
Bedingfield wore a very uncaftan-looking dress from the designer to the party. She’s working on a new album and said her time at New York Fashion Week has been inspiring her work.
“I’m here to support my friend Rachel, but I love fashion and I get a lot from it creatively,” she said.
Roy’s friends marveled at her composure, considering the pending show. “Could I have done other things tonight? Yes. But once I got here, and [I] see people I haven’t seen in a long time and eat food I wouldn’t normally get to eat, I was really happy this came together,” she said. “It’s all about balancing the work load.”
