So is Burberry ready to move its men’s show from Milan to London? Everyone at the brand’s cocktail party on Sunday night at its Brompton Road store in London — where the young indie musician Miles Kane entertained the crowds — was dying to know.
“Everything is a possibility,” Burberry’s chief creative officer, Christopher Bailey, told WWD. “We have a wonderful opportunity to show in Milan, but it is also something the industry needs to look at, because it is very expensive to send over the journalists, the buyers and the models.
“However, it can’t just be one brand moving. It has to be a whole movement. But there is definitely an opportunity, and I get excited about new opportunities,” Bailey added.
Guests at the party included Tali Lennox, Edie Campbell, Sir Elton John, Freddie Fox, Dan Stevens, Tamzin Merchant and Sophie Kennedy Clark. Eddie Redmayne, who cohosted the party with Bailey, was ever the self-deprecating British gent as he talked about suits.
“I do a silly job — and I don’t usually wear a suit to work. So I appreciate the opportunity to wear a nice suit. It’s a rare thing,” said the actor and face of the Burberry ad campaign, who was dressed in a herringbone jacket and jeans.
Around the corner, British GQ editor Dylan Jones was cohosting a dinner at the new Bulgari Hotel with Calvin Klein’s men’s wear designer Italo Zucchelli. Dan Stevens, Benedict Cumberbatch, Alex James, Tinie Tempah, Patrick Grant and Sarah Solemani were among the guests. Stevens had nothing but enthusiasm for Calvin Klein underwear: “There’s nothing like pulling on a new pair of Calvin Klein boxers. It’s a whole thigh-genital thing. You’ve gotta try it,” he said in jest.
Following his appearance on Spencer Hart’s catwalk, Cumberbatch — in a Hart suit — admitted that he was moved by the experience. “I was petrified,” he said. “It’s nothing like doing a play, when you have lines and a character and a director telling you what to do. I was on such a high afterward that I couldn’t stop talking.”
