The opening of Diane von Furstenberg’s “Journey of a Dress” retrospective Friday night at the historic Wilshire May Company building in Los Angeles was a party befitting of a fashion diva, complete with a fleet of printed Fiats and a sea of stars sporting versions of her famous wrap dress.
Gwyneth Paltrow, Demi Moore, Allison Williams, Coco Rocha, Raquel Welch, Marisa Tomei, Robin Wright and Dylan Penn were but a few of those paying homage. “I already found my dress in the exhibit and got my picture taken next to the mannequin,” said Williams. Even Anna Wintour, who came with André Leon Talley, Hamish Bowles and Tonne Goodman in tow, donned DVF.

Though he couldn’t wear a dress, Edward Norton snapped photos of the various images blown up along the time-line wall.
“I mean, she’s a legend,” said Wright. “I was 22 when I bought my first wrap dress and I thought it was so hot. She’s a true fashionista. That’s why I brought my daughter. I wanted her to see all this,” she said hugging Penn, whom she called “my little nugget.”
Ashley Olsen called the exhibit “beautiful,” and Welch gushed, “Her prints are the best. So European and sexy, like Missoni, maybe even better.” Moore, Gia Coppola and Jacqui Getty made it past the crush at the mannequin installation to a Studio 54-style disco den. “I was thinking first of comfort,” said Moore of her sequined wrap jumpsuit. “We definitely weren’t the first ones in for the fitting, but I’m glad I ended up with this. In the long run, it’s good for dancing.”
