“I go to bed with a designer every night and wake up with one every morning — but it’s always the same designer,” said British Prime Minister David Cameron during a brief talk at Number 10 Downing Street to mark the opening of London Collections: Men on Monday night.
The self-deprecating prime minister, who admitted he doesn’t know anything about fashion, was referring, of course, to his wife Samantha, a creative consultant for Smythson. He said that earlier in the day she prepared him for the cocktail party: “She told me: ‘You’re going to meet really important people — don’t screw up.’”

Cameron, who addressed a crowd that included Tommy Hilfiger, Tom Ford, Dylan Jones, David Gandy, Sandra Choi, Simon Holloway, Natalie Massenet and Claire Malcolm, also made a full disclosure about his outfit for the evening, which included a Richard James suit, Oliver Sweeney shoes and Marks & Spencer underpants.
“Probably more information than was needed,” he said.
He gave the crowd a rousing talk about the importance of fashion to the British economy, said he wanted to manufacture more high-end wares in Britain and that the industry should go for gold.
“It could not have been a better start to the new year,” said Massenet, the new head of the British Fashion Council. “The stage is set.”
After the prime minister dashed off, the conversation turned to more timely topics — New Year’s resolutions.
“I always want more time with my family,” said Hilfiger.
Holloway added: “I need to find another jacket like this Prada one — I’ve gotten so many compliments on it tonight,” he said of his double-breasted number.
