WWD photographer Steve Eichner sees it all and shares his unique perspective from the front lines of New York Fashion Week — from the runways in the morning to the after parties and after-after parties at night.
9:54 a.m.: Models wearing #herreralive T-shirts as I enter the show.
10:03 a.m.: I’m snapping Prince Dimitri of Yugoslavia in the front row and Yaz Hernández walks up. “Sit next to him,” I instruct her. “Sit on my lap,” he chimes in.
10:45 a.m.: The whole armory has been transformed into a football stadium, the field is the runway, the invites look like Super Bowl tickets, and they’re giving out Hilfiger pennants. The Jumbotron is showing pictures of models from the show: Liu Wen, quarterback; Julia van Os, tight end. “I think I just saw someone make a pass at one of the models,” someone cracks.
11:12 a.m.: Then a real football player arrives. Victor Cruz, wide receiver for the New York Giants. Feel at home, Victor?
11:27 a.m: Ah, young love. Rita Ora and Ricky Hilfiger (Tommy’s son) enter the stadium holding hands. He gives her a big kiss as a lightning storm of flashes bathe them. They make their way to their seats, but the front row is too full. He squeezes into a spot and she sits on his lap. They cuddle. Awww…
4:06 p.m.: Susan Sarandon and Donna embrace.
4:08 p.m.: With matching knit hats and colorful outfits, Mickey Boardman and Bryanboy add some pop to the mostly black outfits found in the front row.
Alice + Olivia
5:07 p.m.: “Let me get a DJ photo!” I organize Mia Moretti, DJ Margo, Nervo and DJ Helena. Snap! “They’re DJs from Australia, but Mia owns New York,” I coo. “Yeah, but I’ll sell it anytime,” Mia says back.
5:11 p.m.: My mission here is to get a nice shot of the “Broad City” girls for a story we’re doing. “What is ‘Broad City’? A raunchier version of ‘Two Broke Girls’?” I ask. Finally, Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson finish the press line gauntlet. Their publicist points them to me and they pose. “Nice, but have some fun! You’re supposed to be funny!” Nothing…
5:31 p.m.: “Can I get a pic with you?” a fan asks Michael Sheen. “No, sorry,” he replies. “I shouldn’t even be here. I’m in no condition after that SNL 40th party last night.” Just as another fan approaches, Michael and Sarah Silverman are whisked into the presentation.
Rag & Bone
8:01 p.m.: Partaking in the yummy beer and snacks. Now I’m ready!
8:05 p.m.: I take a shot of Michael Pitt’s dirty combat boots. He gives me a look like, What the hell are you doing? “I gotta get the footwear, man,” I tell him. He cracks up.
Purple magazine dinner
10:02 p.m.: I get the usual shot of Olivier Zahm creeping on a girl.
10:19 p.m.: David Neville, Marcus Wainwright and Andrew Rosen huddle over an iPhone reading their review.
10:34 p.m.: “Can I get a photo?” one shooter asks Uma Thurman as she arrives. “Who are you?” she asks, then exclaims, “Not now, wait till I’m drunk.”
