Thursday night, several generations of Guinnesses gathered at — where else? — Dublin’s Guinness Storehouse museum to celebrate the 70th birthday of Lady Miranda Iveagh, the widow of Benjamin Guinness, Lord Iveagh. Ivana Lowell (granddaughter of Maureen Guinness), Desmond Guinness and his son, Patrick Guinness, packed the top-floor bar and checked out the view of Dublin. “Normally, you only see all the family at weddings and funerals, so it’s so nice to see everyone here,” said Lowell. Virtually the entire guest list was, as Patrick Guinness put it, “part of the clan.” Right down to Iveagh’s grandchildren, who sang a rousing chorus of “Happy Birthday” for their grandmother.

Even Alannah Weston, one of few non-clan members in attendance, was practically family: Her mother, Hilary, is a close friend of Iveagh’s and she “grew up with” Iveagh’s children. “I was born in Ireland, and my husband is half Irish, too — he’s looking after my girls tonight,” said Weston, who was having a brief sojourn away from her role as Selfridges’ creative director.
Not that the lady of the hour would have wanted to celebrate her birthday with anyone else. “Every time I land in Dublin airport, it feels like I’m coming home,” said Iveagh, whose planning got high marks from son Rory.
“Above all, she knows how to have a good party,” he said.
