That Dom Pérignon would launch its latest P2 cuvée with a dinner at Martha Stewart’s East Hampton home should come as no surprise. She is, after all, the ultimate hostess, and has been a friend of the brand for more than a decade. “Our relationship with Martha started over 10 years ago when she came to visit the chateau in France. Since then, over the years, we’ve done lots of private little dinners here and there,” Dom Pérignon vice president Trent Fraser said as guests began to trickle into Stewart’s abode on Saturday night.
Cocktail hour was held in the garden, where Stewart personally greeted every guest as they arrived, including the likes of Howard Stern, Reed Krakoff, Scarlett Johansson and Blythe Danner. The landscaping had been completed just in time for the event, Stewart explained. “Hurricane Sandy actually did quite a number on my property. It killed some old trees and ripped the roof off my house. I was redoing everything, perhaps a little slowly,” she said. “Then Dom came along and asked if I wanted to host a party. So that hurried me up.”
Although the prospect of a garden party in high heels intimidated some — one editor nearly toppled on the gravel driveway — Sarah Jessica Parker took a can-do attitude. “You have to know going into the night that you will most likely end up with mud and grass on your shoes,” she said. “But it’s kind of a privilege to be invited to a party like this. And if you leave with Martha’s mud and grass on your shoes, aren’t you the luckier for it?”
Anyone hoping to perhaps sneak a peak inside Stewart’s home was disappointed — the entire party was outdoors, and those in need of a restroom were directed to portable toilets stationed behind the hedges. Though, they were outfitted with Nest scented candles and hand soaps.
A dinner of caviar and couscous royale was served on the veranda along with, naturally, several pours of Champagne.
Meanwhile over in Water Mill around the same time, Calvin Klein, Erin Beatty, Bettina Prentice, Casey Fremont Crowe and Jill Stuart were among the guests perusing the silent auction at the Beechnut Hill Farm estate for the annual ACRIA Cocktails at Sunset benefit sponsored by David Yurman and hosted by Ross Bleckner, Jeffrey Colle, David Kleinberg and Stewart Shining.
