Even though it was Golden Globes weekend, other awards shows were itching to get a leg up on the season.
On Saturday morning, independent film’s freshest faces flocked to BOA Steakhouse in West Hollywood to fete with cohosts Alessandro Nivola, Emily Mortimer and Angela Bassett the nominees at the Independent Spirit Awards, which take place in Santa Monica the night before the Academy Awards.
Members of the “Fruitvale Station” cast, including Michael B. Jordan, who was recognized by the indie awards but snubbed by the Globes, reunited on the red carpet. “My mom has me on Google Alerts and she’s the one who breaks the news to me about anything in the press,” Jordan said of learning about his nomination. “It was a cool moment.…The Independent Spirit Awards embody what filmmaking is at its core.”
Other guests included nominees Julie Delpy (“Before Midnight”), Will Forte (“Nebraska”) and Toby Halbrooks and James M. Johnston (“Ain’t Them Bodies Saints”). Mortimer made a head-turning entrance with her cohost and husband, Nivola, who cut a handsome figure in suit by The Kooples — a present from his wife for his last birthday. “When I first met Emily, I had absolutely no sense of style and I had Fabio hair,” the actor said. “He wore white, billowy shirts and talked about foreign whiskeys a lot,” his wife added.
