“I can’t wait to start working with Shirley MacLaine,” said an enthusiastic Michelle Dockery, who plays Lady Mary in “Downton Abbey,” of her future co-star who will play Cora Crawley’s mother. “I loved her in ‘The Apartment’ and ‘Sweet Charity.’ ”
Dockery joined guests such as Lana Del Rey, Michelle Williams, Gillian Anderson, Lady Helen and Tim Taylor, Freddie Fox and Nicholas Hoult at cocktails and dinner hosted by Mulberry’s creative director Emma Hill and Ronnie Cooke Newhouse at the Savile Club on Sunday night. While Del Rey may have been the star of the evening, performing an acoustic set for guests after dinner, she wasn’t the only music talent there. Dockery is an enthusiastic crooner, too. The actress recently laid down tracks for her co-star Elizabeth McGovern’s second album with Sadie and the Hotheads.
“It’s probably strange to think of us in our trailers [on the set of ‘Downton Abbey’] both with our guitars! But I love to sing, and have also performed at Ronnie Scott’s in London,” said Dockery.
And at the moment, she’s relishing the success of the TV show: “You see a script, and you know you’re onto a good thing, but we could have never anticipated the kind of reaction we’ve been getting — yes, I’m enjoying the moment.”
Later that evening, Del Rey wowed dinner guests, singing “Without You,” “Million Dollar Man” and “Video Games.” “I dialed my husband — who’s at home babysitting — and he listened through the phone,” said an excited Alannah Weston, after the singer finished her set.
