Louis Vuitton kicked off the holiday season Tuesday night when it hosted a Diwali (or Festival of Lights)-themed Salon de Louis Vuitton (part of an ongoing series) along with Waris Ahluwalia and Jhumpa Lahiri, to benefit the SOS Children’s Villages charity, which builds homes for abandoned and orphaned kids across the globe. Prince Yeshwant Rao Holkar, Anne McNally and journalist Rula Jebreal (whose novel Miral is the basis for Julian Schnabel’s upcoming film of the same name) enjoyed cocktails on the second floor of the brand’s 57th Street flagship, whose windows boast a Diwali-inspired decor (there is also a special Diwali collection). Ahluwalia and McNally admired the luggage while discussing an upcoming trip to India.
“I’m only going if I get to bring that,” said McNally, pointing at a cherry red trunk. Guests were soon ferried upstairs for a South Asian-tinged meal of cumin and ginger rubbed guinea hen, followed by a tasting from Ahluwahlia¹s new tea collection. Lahiri then read from the title story of her collection “Unaccustomed Earth.” “I found my Prince Charming a while ago, but when I was trying on these clothes last week I had a Cinderella moment,” she said as husband Alberto Vourvoulias-Bush looked on before taking to the mike.
A traditional Tabla player performance rounded out the evening.
