Shoes and a private lunch at Bergdorf Goodman were all the bait needed to draw the well-heeled, uptown doyennes of Manhattan to toast Malone Souliers’ Stateside debut on Wednesday afternoon. The London-based footwear brand — led by creative director Mary Alice Malone and managing director Roy Luwolt — also unveiled a collection of eight ready-made styles of heels for the eyes of attendees, including Alexandra Lebenthal, Helen Lee Schifter and Tali Lennox.
“I think I, like all women — we’re very moody creatures. You’re a different human being at 9 a.m., and probably a different woman at 5 p.m. and most definitely a different woman at 8 p.m. Hopefully I can design to encompass all of that,” said Malone, who wore a set of emerald-hued, open-toe sandals for the occasion.
“I spent most of the summer in London and out in Wainscott, and in Wainscott we don’t even wear shoes,” cracked Schifter, whose footwear hiatus is only temporary. “You give your feet time off in the cornfields in the summer and then in the fall it’s the judicious use of high heels. My feet might protest.”
Lennox contemplated the balance between comfort and style. “You want to have comfortable shoes but you also want something different; you want a flash of color,” she said, herself sporting a pair of orange snakeskin lace-ups from Malone’s collection. “I walk everywhere [in New York]. I’ve really gotten into my neon Nikes a lot.”
