FOR ENGLAND: Mulberry recreated the lush green gardens of its birthplace, Somerset, England, in San Francisco last week with a chorus of robins chirping, owls hooting and tea-cups clinking among an allegorical maze of topiaries, to celebrate the opening of its new flagship. Vanessa Getty and Harper’s Bazaar hosted the evening which drew the likes of Alexis Traina, Vandy Boudreau, Jenna Hunt, Kamal Shah, Allison Speer, Helen Yu, Ricky Serbin, Betty Lin, and Paris-based designer Andrew Gn, in town for a trunk show.
“I’m so happy to raise Mulberry’s profile in San Francisco,” said Getty, dressed in a gold-beaded Mulberry dress. “My friends love the handbags, and Mulberry has been so generous to my charity, San Francisco Bay Humane Friends, which runs a mobile clinic offering basic healthcare for pets.”
“San Francisco is super-dynamic now, yet it retains a sense of tradition, so it’s a perfect fit for our English-with-flair style,” said Mulberry USA president Carl Barbato.
Information technology manager Helen Yu arrived with her fashionable baby, Marni. Yu’s outfit for the evening: a Mulberry mohair Boyfriend coat over a gold-stitched chiffon dress by Isabel Marant for H&M.
“I was very lucky to get this dress,” noted Yu. “The line [Marant] launched today, and some customers had been waiting all night. I decided to hop over after lunch, and this was one of the few pieces left.”
Alexis Traina combined her Mulberry patterned evening coat with a burgundy-colored suede ‘Clemmie’ clutch.
Gn chatted to Carolyn Chang, who was wearing a leather-trimmed coat he designed when Sloan Barnett arrived wearing the same zip-front design, hers trimmed in black velvet. Gn, nervous about the reaction of his clients, dashed upstairs. He was coaxed down for a photo. “This is funny, and I’m happy to be wearing the same outfit as Carolyn, who’s the top plastic surgeon in town,” said Barnett.
“Beautiful things are beautiful on everyone,” said Chang, kissing Gn on the cheek.
