“I’m wearing something short but I’m young so it’s OK, right?” Chelsea Leyland shrugged, showing ample leg in a mini lace frock amongst a sea of gowns at the Mandarin Oriental’s grand ballroom on Manhattan’s Upper West Side on Monday night. She joined assorted PYTs — Emma Roberts, Hannah Bronfman, Atlanta de Cadenet, Laura Love, Camille Rowe, Harley Viera Newton, Elsa Hosk, Elettra Wiedemann, Crystal Renn and the musician Oh Land (née Nanna Øland Fabricius) — at the 11th annual New Yorkers for Children spring dinner dance, this year sponsored by Chloé and jewelry brand Lauren X Khoo.
Olivia Chantecaille caught up with Allison Aston, who said she spent the previous day chasing her kids around on an Easter-egg hunt and was relieved to unwind. Jill Kargman had a more Jewish-friendly Sunday: “We went to Atrium in Dumbo and had the best, Passover-friendly brunch,” she said. “My kids felt deprived though, because they were like, ‘Where’s our Easter-egg hunt?’ And I was like, ‘Hey, a billion people woke up on a dirt floor. You’re fine.’”
There was nary a dry eye in the room as the organization’s annual event, which supports youth in foster care, got under way with opening remarks from Katia Steward. She explained that she was 11 years old when her father murdered her mother, leaving her in foster care for the remainder of her adolescence before receiving a grant from New Yorkers for Children. After a roaring round of applause, the feisty — and six months pregnant — Christie’s auctioneer Lydia Fenet took over the podium to goad the room’s big spenders.
At table 15, Nina Agdal looked down at her plate of buffalo mozzarella. “This is a lot of food for girls in tight dresses,” she said. She appeared to be documenting the evening as part of a photo-blogging assignment for the site Modelinia, and art-directed the food on the plate with her fork. “Gotta make this look like food porn,” she said as she snapped photos and drafted captions on her iPhone note pad.
The Sports Illustrated swimsuit model, who was wearing a pair of Lauren Khoo’s dangling diamond earrings, asked the designer for the price, to which Khoo responded “30 to 35 [thousand.]”
Agdal let out an audible gasp. “I need a boyfriend. I’ll get back to you when I can buy these.”
