Pier 60 at Manhattan’s Chelsea Piers had a decidedly summer-camp vibe about it on Thursday night, and not just because the Fresh Air Fund had done the space up in hula hoops and pinwheels for its annual spring fund-raiser. The on-river accommodations also allowed partygoers a close-up view of passing sailboats and a few brave souls paddle boarding on the Hudson, as well as a particularly intense sunset to contend with. Among those enjoying predinner cocktails were Thakoon Panichgul, Peter Som, Richard Chai and actress Cody Horn.
Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, two of the evening’s honorees, proved a particular draw for some of the Fresh Air Fund campers in attendance, who flocked to the pair for photos. The designers had recently hosted a group of program participants for a career shadow at their company Dualstar. “They were some of the most engaged, present and enthusiastic children,” Ashley Olsen said when accepting the award.

Overall, the event brought in $1.3 million for the charity, which in addition to running its own camps, sets up New York City kids with host families in more rustic environs. The night’s other honoree, New York Giants breakout receiver Victor Cruz, took some time before dinner to recall his own childhood summer pastimes.
“For the most part, we’d just go to the pool and go swimming. I was in summer camp every year,” the Paterson, N.J., native said. “We would play good old hide-and-go-seek.
You got to go to the classic hide-and-go-seek when you got a big playing area, stuff to hide around.”
