There was a lot to toast at a dinner for Prabal Gurung at Indochine on Thursday night (namely his resort collection), but the designer was reluctant to take credit at the fete, which was officially hosted by John Demsey and MAC Cosmetics.
“We’re celebrating all of us being together, it being so hot out and that we’re now in the air-conditioning, Paloma Faith being here to sing for us, my team being so amazing and MAC’s incredible support,” Gurung explained during the cocktail hour, as revelers like Zoe Saldana, Joan Smalls, Magnus Berger and Olivier Zahm crowded around the narrow bar for lychee martinis and mojitos.

“Summer drinks,” one bartender said of the beverage options on offer, “it’s officially summer today.” And so it was, with temperatures outside resting in the almost triple digits.
Gridlock by the bar gave way to a more relaxed dining atmosphere as the evening progressed, with Gurung regaling partygoers during the first course with an impassioned speech that, among other things, gave thanks to his team and congratulated Smalls on her recent W magazine cover. (Smalls, who wore a graphic printed dress by Gurung, blew him a kiss.) The designer spent most of the evening chatting with guests and table-hopping with a late-arriving Diane von Furstenberg.
Faith, a British chanteuse of the Amy Winehouse and Adele mold (replete with an elaborate hairpiece and Forties-influenced makeup) performed a pair of songs from her upcoming U.S. release, including a soulful ballad titled “Picking up the Pieces.”
“I’m a big fan of Prabal’s — this is his dress. And I’m a big fan of MAC. They’ve been giving me free makeup for ages, and now I’m having a bit of success, so it’s working out,” the singer said.
“They give it to all the big trannies in London, too, so it’s all going very well, because trannies love MAC and I’m a big tranny,” she added playfully.
As dinner wound down into dessert and Faith’s performance gave way to a DJ set by Chelsea Leyland, Gurung presented Saldana (very gamine in a peplum top and printed shorts by the designer) with a birthday cake and a quick toast to his “dear, dear friend.” Did she have any specific birthday wishes?
“That it’s cooler out tomorrow!” the actress laughed.
