Reed Krakoff die-hards and sugar enthusiasts alike swarmed the Ladurée flagship on Madison Avenue on Monday night to fete Krakoff’s collaboration with the macaron purveyor. The designer created a limited-edition treat, a matte-black-looking, dark-chocolate-tasting macaron, to be sold exclusively at the Upper East Side shop for the duration of New York Fashion Week.

“The process started with the packaging, actually. I loved the idea of taking this iconic, historical packaging and doing a modern take on it,” the designer said of the sleek black, minimalist collectable box that will encase the cookies. “We thought about doing the box in matte black. Rendering it all in one color seemed interesting.”

Guests, most prudently resisting the urge to pig out, circled the sweets piled onto silver tiered trays. Alexandra and Theodora Richards arrived with a clique of girls. “These are so good,” Theodora said midchew, shaking her head in satisfaction.

Krakoff ducked out early, explaining that he had only an hour to kill between fittings. Earlier in the evening, he reflected on how this collaboration had given him a bit of perspective.

“My children have such a sweet tooth, so they’re more impressed by this than anything else I’ve ever done,” he said. “It’s definitelymy highest accomplishment in my children’s eyes. And my French wife’s as well.”
