On Tuesday night, down in the shadowy cellar of NoHo spot Acme, a “Star Wars”-themed romp feteing Rodarte’s fall collection was unfurling. Laura and Kate Mulleavy demurely held court in a quiet nook of the dark room while partygoers milled about, sipping the free booze. Chloe Nørgaard, holed up towards the back end of the room, talked about walking the show that afternoon. “I usually dye my hair based on my mood, but Kate and Laura asked me awhile ago if I’d walk in their show exclusively and if I could dye my hair for it,” the model explained of her rose-hued mane. “They were thinking some sort of pastel color and this is what we came up with.”
Arden Wohl barreled down the stairs with a clique of friends a little after midnight. Moments later, the “Star Wars” theme song began to blare, cueing the custom cake made for birthday girl Kate — finished with a Shrek-looking monster face — to be rolled out. Guests totting glowing light sabers led the way as the room began singing “Happy Birthday” and Kate attempted to blow out her sparkler candles.
It wasn’t long before the party got a bit rowdier. Whitney Houston’s “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” baited practically all the female partiers — Julia Restoin Rotifled, Irina Nikolaeva and Sofía Sanchez Barrenechea — to the dance floor. Barrenechea glittered, shimmying in an iridescent beaded bra top with her fiancé Alexandre de Betak, who sported a Stormtrooper mask. Laura Mulleavy borrowed a friend’s baseball cap, which she wore backwards as she bopped around. Sister Kate boogied with another prop: a tuft of flashing balloons that once hung over the DJ booth. Lauren Remington Platt swung with a friend until three pies of pizza arrived, and she nabbed a slice. Nørgaard twirled around, the fringe on her vintage leather jacket and her long pink locks creating a sort of cyclone.
“I always think the most fun parties are the more personal ones,” Kate said, surveying the room. “Where you can listen to music you love…and just dance.”
