Rufus Wainwright and Kylie Minogue seem like an unlikely singing pairing to be sure. But when the two teamed up to perform together at the Last Song of Summer Concert at Robert Wilson’s The Watermill Center on Saturday, there was a surprising amount of chemistry.
“Call us the ‘Kylie-ttes,'” quipped Wainwright as he took the stage behind the Australian chanteuse with a pack of his extended family that included aunts Anna and Jane McGarrigle.

“That’s brilliant,” responded Minogue. “I’ve never had Kylie-ttes before.” The duo then launched into a diverse set list that included Down Under folk songs, Judy Garland covers, a doo-wop rendition of “The Loco-motion” and “If I Loved You” from “Carousel.” (“A perfect duet for a gay guy and a straight girl,” Wainwright helpfully pointed out.)
The audience, a motley crowd that included Anjelica Huston and Countess LuAnn de Lesseps, seemed to enjoy the show. By the time Minogue belted out her dance hit “Can’t Get You Out of My Head,” almost all were on their feet.
