New Yorkers braved record high temperatures on Wednesday night for the Museum of Modern Art’s Party in the Garden.

Agnes Gund, Eliza Reed Bolen and Marie Josee Kravis cheerfully did tours of the museum’s sculpture garden during cocktail hour, along with artists Lawrence Weiner, Alex Katz, Chuck Close and current MoMA star Olafur Eliasson. Of course, not everyone wanted to hang out in the sweltering heat. “I’m heading inside. I don’t want to have to start flapping my arms to get air,” joked Diane Sawyer, whose husband Mike Nichols was honored at the event. Claire Danes and her boyfriend, Hugh Dancy, quickly followed her example.

Diane von Furstenberg, meanwhile, was blase about the weather. “I don’t know why everyone complains about the heat,” she drawled. “I don’t mind it at all.”

After dinner (thankfully inside the museum) many of the grownups decamped but the youngsters who jam-packed the outdoor after-party didn’t seem to wilt in the humidity. They crowded around a temporary stage to watch rapper M.I.A. perform–though there was a bit of a culture clash between the rebellious performer’s crew and the preppy banker types at the event. “For this song, everyone pull out your lighters,” M.I.A’s collaborator Africa Boy exhorted the crowd. “Or your BlackBerrys.”
