Amid the demure Tribeca Film Festival screenings popping up all around Manhattan, a larger, splashier premiere rolled out in the city. “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” has been making the international rounds — Paris, London, Berlin and Rome — and the comic-book flick finally made it’s way home to New York on Thursday night.
Die-hard fans who had come more than four hours early to line up along the barricades at the Ziegfeld Theater had been awarded with access to a special boxed section on the carpet, where they were showered with Spider-Man memorabilia — shirts, water bottles, temporary tattoos and masks of the leading characters — while waiting for the cast to arrive.
Prompted to wear “Spidey colors” by the invitation, there was the expected sea of red and blue — although the hues were rarely worn together. “I thought…yeah, this makes sense for tonight,” said actress Uzo Aduba, one of the few to have taken the memo to heart in a red, blue (and black) frock. Pharrell Williams also went along with the theme with one of his signature Vivienne Westwood top hats (this one in blue) while Kendrick Lamar went for an all blue (denim on denim) look.
The real action was saved for the end, when Spidey himself, Andrew Garfield, arrived (in a school bus, no less) along with co-stars Emma Stone and Jamie Foxx, his young daughter in tow. The trio posed for their shrieking fans before being quickly ushered past reporters and into the theater.
