“This really is the best place to have a dinner,” Lily Kwong said Wednesday night. Kwong accepted a flute of Champagne from a waiter and surveyed the heavy velvet drapes and large-scale neo-Expressionist paintings that line the walls at everyone’s favorite glitzy Gramercy haunt, Rose Bar. “It’s very, romantic…,” Kwong laughed. The lighting scheme was sultry (as in flatteringly dim), but the tables were ablaze with candles and small bunches of flora peppering the white table linens. Marchesa was hosting the dinner before the Whitney Studio Kickoff Party happening later that evening on the rooftop terrace of the hotel.
Not that the fashion brand’s involvement was completely whole. Georgina Chapman was nowhere to be seen, leaving Marchesa half-represented by co-designer Keren Craig. Though the invitation had cited Chapman, Nate Lowman, Karolina Kurkova and Miranda Kerr as co-hosts, none was actually present at the dinner.
Christian Cota, Behnaz Sarafpour, Monique Péan and Natalie Obradovich were on hand, as were Lisa Anastos, who mugged for photographers by the roaring fireplace, and Dalia Oberlander.
“That fireplace is getting me excited for the cooler weather,” Anastos said.
Amanda Hearst was cheered to be relaxing after fashion week and in good company.
“It’s a nice thing, to be here and have dinner and just enjoy everyone’s company,” she said.
One of the draws of the Gramercy Hotel is its dedication to appreciating art. “Well, it works,” Richard Phillips offered of the hotel’s collaboration with the museum as he swirled through the rooftop cocktail party, peering behind a potted fern into a room half-filled with people, who looked back quizzically. Was he looking for anything, or anyone in particular?
“Just looking,” Phillips sighed, making way for another room.
