Celebs and polo enthusiasts alike made the trek to New Jersey’s Liberty State Park on Saturday to take in the annual Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic where co-host Nacho Figueras’ team Black Watch went head-to-head against Team Espresso. Revelers really got into the spirit, sartorially speaking, with prim tea dresses, floppy beach hats and terrain-friendly footwear.
“I went for these because I needed a bit of a chunky heel for the grass,” Poppy Delevingne explained, motioning to her glittery Givenchy wedges. “I was expecting rain but as I’m English, I always dress inappropriately for the weather.”

The girl about town was feeling especially aware of her Brit status: “Polo is quite English so this is all making me a bit homesick. As it’s the Queen’s Jubilee, I feel like I should be being patriotic on my home soil but this is a close second.”
Delevingne, perhaps due to her transatlantic roots, was much more up to speed on the basics of the sport than others.
“I don’t really know the rules. I’m learning as I watch,” said Dree Hemingway, whose boyfriend Phil Windsor of Fat Radish, provided the bites for the event. “I figure there’s a goal and they’re trying to score on that goal. How complicated can it be?”
Jason Wu, who was parked on an umbrella-shaded couch, could commiserate.
“I did a ceremonial ball throw once but I’m definitely not known for my athletic skills,” the designer said. “It’s just nice to take it all in, I love the mood of it all. It’s very resort.” Speaking of which, how was that going?
“I’m pretty much finished so I can relax and have some Champagne,” Wu said.
