Atlantans don’t need an excuse to show off their new spring clothes, but The Atlanta Steeplechase makes a nice one anyway. Of course, the focus is supposed to be on the horses, but watching people — as they indulge in elaborate gourmet picnics, soak up the sun and parade around in clever hats — is really what the event is all about.
Now in its 29th year, the most recent edition of the race lured more than 2,000 people, including lots of big spenders. Florals, neutrals, linen and sheer rayon were everywhere you looked. And no outfit was complete without a major hat. The winner: a straw topper with an enormous sunflower center.
