Tucked into the green hills of Switzerland is a tiny art-lover’s paradise, the Fondation Balthus, housed within the late artist’s own very grand Grand Chalet at Rossiniere, a quick drive from Gstaad. Late last month, Christie’s Francois Curiel joined those who made a pilgrimage to the quiet mountain village for the opening of an exhibition of Balthus’ drawings, scores of beautiful working sketches the artist used to plan some of his most important works. “If this show was exhibited in Paris, there would be a line around the block,” Curiel said. Instead, Setsuko Klossowska de Rola, the artist’s widow, and his children, Harumi, Stanislas and Thadee, hosted a quietly reverential crowd among the rose bushes in the chalet’s garden. The exhibition, full of drawings owned by the family, some of which have never before been exhibited, is up until mid-September.
