Though many have deserted New York City for the summer holidays, those left behind were treated to a taste of the Italian Riviera Wednesday afternoon, courtesy of Fendi. The fashion house, along with indefatigable hostess Fabiola Beracasa, launched its new “To You” clutch with a Capri-themed lunch on the roof of the Gramercy Park Hotel.
Fittingly, several guests had just returned from Italy, including Zani Gugelmann and Olivia Chantecaille, who’d visited the real Capri for the first time. “I was already in Italy, so I thought, ‘Why not?'” Chantecaille said.
For her part, Beracasa had taken photographs of her favorite restaurant in Ischia (for non-Italians, that’s the next island over from Capri) and helped recreate the leisurely atmosphere Stateside. But this was no pale imitation — as the four courses rolled out, Eleanor Ylvisaker, Shoshanna Gruss, Alexis Bryan and Byrdie Bell dug into buffalo mozzarella, tomatoes on the vine, grilled squid, vegetables and fresh fish, all dressed with Borgo balsamic vinegar that had literally arrived by plane from Italy that morning.
As the lone man, Fendi North America president Gianluca Flore understandably tried to tempt his guests to stay all afternoon. “I will call your offices for you,” he joked. “Blame it on Fendi.”
But the Americans couldn’t be totally swept out to sea. Lauren Davis, for one, said “This might look like Capri, but it’s still New York.”
