A cocktail reception in honor of the Bruce Paltrow Oral Cancer fund may not sound like the most upbeat of occasions, but there were a few laughs at the home of television producer Tom Fontana on Wednesday evening. That’s because hostess Blythe Danner–who lost her husband to the disease six years ago–did her best to keep guests, including Christy Turlington, Ethan Hawke and Michael Stipe, in stitches.
When a medical expert addressed the crowd about oral cancer treatment and prevention, Danner playfully heckled, “Tell them about oral sex. Everybody wants to know about oral sex.” (The actress was referring to one of the waysa person can increase their risks of the disease.)
“We used to host these kinds of things all the time at our house,” explained Danner, “so I know how to do it.”
In fact, Danner, whose son Jake was also on hand, even had a lighthearted attitude towards one guest who spoke loudly during a cancer survivor’s moving speech. “It’s okay,” Danner said with a laugh. “He’s Woody Allen.”
