It was all stars at the Hotel Martinez in Cannes on Friday night, where Penélope Cruz was preparing for the premiere of her in-competition movie, “Volver,” at the International Film Festival. Cruz plays a hoop-earringed, working-class moll in the film, but on Friday night she opted for full-throttle Hollywood glamour in a customized vanilla silk couture gown from Dior by John Galliano for Christian Dior. “It took two hours to get ready,” said the jittery star, gesturing a V-sign, while awaiting her limo.

Also in the queue was Alber Elbaz, in a blue velvet bow tie, who said he was in town to catch a few movies with friends. A Chanel-clad Virginie Ledoyen zipped by muttering how late she was for the event. And in the lobby, weary-eyed jury member Monica Bellucci, who wore Dior to the opening-night gala, said she’s been watching two screenings a day, but was taking her eyes off the screen for the night and going out to dinner.

The hotel had other action going on, with Beyoncé Knowles attending an in-house premiere of her film, “Dreamgirls,” based on the Sixties’ Broadway musical. Knowles was wearing an electric blue creation by her mom, Tina Knowles, for the event, but said she and her mother had played only a small part in the movie’s costumes. “We only collaborated on the photo-shoot scene,” she said, attributing the rest to costumier Sharon Davis.
