Who better to anoint the new Burberry flagship than some honest-to-goodness British royalty? Viscount and Viscountess Linley, known as David and Serena, hiked from floor to floor at the opening party Thursday night, marveling at the mammoth space. Serena even arrived in a Burberry trench and David, clad in a gray suit, swore he had some Burberry nearby.
“I had a beautiful Burberry scarf on but I checked it downstairs,” he vouched.
Other distinguished guests included Rudolph Giuliani and Judi Nathan, Stella Tennant, Natalia Vodianova, Eliza Reed Bolen, Christopher Bailey and Serena Boardman.
Graydon Carter exercised his right to smoke, discreetly dropping his ashes — just out of Rose Marie Bravo’s line of vision — on the plaid carpeting of the store’s main floor. Bravo, for her part, greeted guests and chatted up Mario Testino, whose sister Giuliana designed an exclusive collection of knitwear for the store.
Meanwhile, Blaine Trump searched for the life-like Burberry lambs with real fur.
“That’s what I want for Christmas,” she told her husband, Robert.
Sophie Dahl, however, had her eye on the life-size wooden British soldiers.
“I love them. They do a marvelous line of Beefeaters here,” she piped.
The after-party, hosted by Vanity Fair, was held at Burberry’s old temporary store — just down the street from the new flagship — which was transformed into a bar. Anna Wintour and Shelby Bryan made an appearance, as did Honor and Violet Fraser. Sandra Bernhard, in a typically defiant gesture, showed up in a Burberry apron, while Serena Bass, who catered the party, educated guests on the finer points of pork sausage and piccalilli relish.
