Angelenos who couldn’t wait for The Boss to come to town jetted to Las Vegas on Sunday to catch his show at the Thomas & Mack Center. After a private dinner at Nobu in the Hard Rock Hotel, Cindy Crawford, Lara Flynn Boyle, Mark Wahlberg and Robert Downey Jr. shuttled in purple Suburbans to the venue. Springsteen neophytes Christina Applegate and Tamara Beckwith admitted they knew none of the lyrics.
“I grew up listening to The Cure in the Eighties,” Applegate said. “I don’t even own an album. But get the Jane’s Addiction cranking and I know all the words!”
Thankfully, there were some die-hards in the group, like Bridget Moynahan, who stood up and belted out every song. “God, there’s so much pressure to sit down,” she joked when Jamie King and her posse lowered themselves into their third-row seats for a slow ballad. “It feels so civilized for a rock concert. Come on, people, stand up!” she cried, grabbing her neighbors hands when the music quickened.
Rabid fan Boyle, seated in the front row, jumped and shimmied for the entire two-and-a-half hour set. “I just love him! I couldn’t be more excited!” she yelled.
A few days earlier in L.A., a shopping party at Louis Vuitton on Rodeo Drive gave several actresses a similar adrenaline rush.
“I’ve never set foot in this store before, but tonight I am feeling dangerous,” said Laura San Giacomo, who hosted the benefit for the Chime Charter School. Dylan and Shiva Rose McDermott, Julianna Margulies and Reese Witherspoon, about to star in “Sweet Home Alabama,” all shopped for the cause.
Over at Fred Segal Melrose, celebrity shoppers sampled scented candles and creams from the new line Nyakio, co-created by publicist Troy Nankin, and later moved up into the hills for James Perse’s 30th birthday bash.
“I was 30 once too, you know,” said Perse’s father, Tommy, waxing nostalgic. But a wine glass crashing to the concrete floor ended his reverie. “I told that boy to use plastic glasses tonight. Glass by the pool is a no-no!”
