A rainy, windy and chilly day would usually be cause for concerned event planners worried about turnout. Apparently that’s not a problem for Chanel, though it might help when the luncheon in question is to launch a coveted new bag, the aptly-named Coco Cocoon (a bag made from parka-like material so puffy that some may have lamented they couldn’t wear it as a jacket).
Guests came to the Chanel SoHo boutique on Thursday from near—Eleanor Ylvisaker, who lives a block away—and far—Shoshanna Gruss, who trekked from East 98th Street. Also there were model Heidi Mount, Fabiola Beracasa, Lauren Santo Domingo, Jeanine Lobell, Charlotte Ronson and co-hosts Jen Brill and Poppy Delevingne, who recently moved back to New York from London. “Just in time for the cold weather,” she said, shivering.

But the prize winner was Danielle Steel, who jetted into town from Paris for one day only. The author, who just finished one book last weekend and has another new one coming out Tuesday, was there to hang out with her daughters Victoria and Vanessa Traina, who was serving as a co-host.
“I love seeing them,” said Steele, who explains she does whirlwind tours every four weeks to visit her nine children. Having so many brings its own risks. “They give me hell,” she said, laughing. “[Vanessa and Victoria] yelled at me this morning, saying ‘Mom, you can’t wear that. It’s too conservative.’”
Not to mention that her Chanel collection isn’t safe. “I love the classic oversized bags, but I don’t have too many of them anymore because some people, who shall remain nameless, go through my closet and say ‘Oh, this is nice.’”
At least she got to re-stock: After a lunch of asparagus salad, roast chicken and tarte tatin (interrupted by several group smoke breaks outside) guests were presented with massive Chanel shopping bags containing the Coco Cocoon.
