Greetings from the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver!
I am here cheering on Team USA with some of my colleagues from Ralph Lauren. We are staying at the historic Fairmont Hotel right in the heart of the city. Today it is sunny and 50 degrees. And the energy and excitement here is infectious.
Upon arriving, I went straight to the USOC’s USA House — the U.S. Olympic Committee’s main headquarters — where I was able to meet some of Team USA’s esteemed athletes including U.S. bobsled team members Shauna Rohbock, Billy Schuffenhauer and Chris Fogt. It was amazing to hear their inspiring stories.
The opening ceremony on Friday was incredible. Watching Team USA take to the stage in their Ralph Lauren uniforms was a proud moment for us. And it was great to see the diverse fashion for each country’s team.
We’ve also found time to check out some great local restaurants, including West and Lumiere. My favorite part of the trip, though, has been walking the streets and encountering people from all over the world proudly representing their countries. This morning I passed a group of Russians in their team outfits and was greeted with a “Go USA” cheer. And walking around town with USA gold medalist mogul skier Hannah Kearney was truly memorable — we couldn’t go half a block without someone, regardless of their nationality, stopping to congratulate her. Their first question was always “How heavy is that?” eyeing her gold medal.
We even managed to squeeze in a small brunch hosted by Vice President Joe Biden at the private home of the U.S. Consul General to Canada and one of the victory ceremonies with a performance by Nelly Furtado.
I wish we could stay longer, but it’s back to New York for fashion week.
Editor’s Note: David Lauren was recently in Vancouver for the Winter Olympics, where Team USA is wearing uniforms designed by Ralph Lauren. He’ll return to New York to take in his father Ralph’s show on Thursday.
