“For us, this is like the start of the summer season,” said Stefano Gabbana of the bash he and Domenico Dolce threw during the closing weekend of the Cannes Film Festival. “We love coming to Cannes — the glamour, the stars. All our friends are here.”
And the two sure know how to throw a party. They imported mirrored columns, disco balls and hundreds of pairs of sunglasses, which were handed out to guests upon arrival, to set the scene at club Baoli. Kylie Minogue got cozy in one corner banquette and Jay-Z settled into another. The junior jet set — a Casiraghi here, a Niarchos there — commandeered its own table in the VIP section while the cast of “Entourage” mingled in the middle. “I mean, I am in party mode,” yelled Rosario Dawson, who, surrounded by several admirers, danced to Gloria Gaynor‘s live performance. Also not lacking company, Dita Von Teese stripped out of her satin skirt and shimmied around in a bodysuit. Skin was certainly in, as shirtless, shorts-clad waiters (presumably also imported from Italy) poured shots down guests’ throats, and lit and passed around sparklers until dawn.
The night began on a tamer note when Chopard hosted its annual Trophy gala to honor up-and-comers Nick Cannon and Archie Panjabi. Under the specially constructed dome, dubbed the Golden Sea Terrace of the Roseraie in Port Canto, Elton John performed a miniconcert for Rosamund Pike, Jude Law, Harvey Weinstein, Asia Argento, Robert Rodriguez and Marion Cotillard. A giddy Sarah Polley jumped up to record it on her camera phone, noting, “This is a pretty nice life.” Toni Collette, however, kept her distance from the crowd. “I’m allergic to cigarette smoke,” she said.
The next day, Alberta Ferretti docked her megayacht, Prometej, in a plum spot in the Old Port to watch the sun set and fete the festival’s first non-French mistress of ceremonies, Diane Kruger. “She is the perfect woman to wear my clothes,” the designer said of the actress, who also is a face of Chanel. “Clean, modern and not at all vulgar.”
“She was so sweet to throw me this party, I just couldn’t say no — and I’ve never been on a yacht before,” marveled Kruger. “I’m loving it.” Along for the ride was beau Joshua Jackson, who appeared to have perfected the casual-luxe look in a shirt, tie and rumpled cardigan. “Well, the only thing I can take credit for is the pants,” he said. “I give all other fashion credit to la maitresse.”
When the fest finally wrapped on Sunday, no one was more relieved to go home than Rose McGowan. “This may be a sad thing to admit,” she said, “but I can’t wait to put on my pajamas. I am over it.”
