Alain Wertheimer, whose family owns Chanel, now owns a vineyard as well. It’s the Chateau Rausan-Segla, which produces a Deuxieme Cru Classe Margaux from one of the best red wine regions of Bordeaux. Chanel is believed to have paid $43 million for the 106-acre spread.
Last summer, Wertheimer was outbid for the world-reknowned Chateau Latour by French distribution tycoon Francois Pinault who controls Groupe Pinault-Printemps. Who got a better deal? Let the wine experts decide. Pinault’s investment holding, Artemis, paid some $119 million for 93 percent of 150-acre Latour, whose vines make a Premier Cru Classe Pauillac.
Both Lancome and Isabella Rossellini say the model’s contract with the cosmetics company is continuing, but should the two part ways, Rossellini has at least one other offer. Umberto Artico, president of Artkos Srl, which makes Perlax toothpaste, put a full-page ad in two Italian newspapers, La Repubblica and La Voce, that said, “Isabella Rossellini call 1670-13230. We want you. Perlax.”
“When I read that she didn’t have a contract with Lancome anymore, I decided to act immediately because she probably has lots of requests. Since we put in last-minute ads, the cost increased tenfold,” says Artico. “But Isabella Rossellini is unique, she’s great.”
Artico says he’s willing to pay Rossellini approximately $2 million for a contract. Not bad, considering that Artkos’s sales in Italy should reach about $3 million in 1994.
Queen Linda? That’s what the 2,700 residents of Pignataro Interamna in central Italy are hoping for. When Linda Evangelista praised the small town and birthplace of her parents on an Italian talk show recently, the town started thinking of a way to return the compliment. “We are trying to organize a village feast for Linda, maybe at the end of September, where she will be the Queen,” said Arcangelo D’Alessandro, mayor of Pignataro. Perhaps if the supermodel goes, she’ll be able to give her 16-year-old cousin, Manuela Evangelista, some tips. The younger Evangelista is just starting her modeling career.
