Oscar Update: Proving that the competition to dress stars for the Oscars is fiercer than ever, several big names have appeared on more than one designer’s list. Armani, Versace and Richard Tyler all say Laura Dern will wear their clothes tonight; Tyler and Valentino both say they’ll dress Elle Macpherson and Nicole Kidman — who is also said to be wearing John Galliano. Tom Hanks is on both Armani’s and Valentino’s list and both Cerruti and Valentino say Al Pacino will wear their tux — Valentino’s being a four-year-old model that supposedly brings the actor luck.
Meanwhile, Patty Scialfa and Lyndall Hobbs can be added to the list of those who’ll wear Vera Wang. The Versace group includes Jane Fonda, Ellen Barkin, Claudia Schiffer and Tia Carrere. Cerruti will dress Frances Fisher, Clint Eastwood and Michael Douglas. Armani will dress Whoopi Goldberg, (who will also wear a Ray Aghayan dress), Glenn Close, Steven Spielberg, Liam Neeson, Emma Thompson, Kenneth Branagh, Winona Ryder, Rosie Perez and Carrie Fisher. Presenters Johnny Depp, Tom Cruise, Christian Slater, Jeremy Irons, Alec Baldwin, Sam Neill and Gene Hackman will wear Armani tuxedos and Kim Basinger is also expected to wear Armani. Valentino will dress Sharon Stone and Rita Wilson.
Katie Ford knows the power of positive reinforcement. The modeling agency executive recently bought one of the magnesium floor tiles from Barbara Kruger’s show at the Mary Boone Gallery. The piece, entitled “My People Are Better Than Your People,” states “My people are better than your people. More intelligent, more graceful, more powerful, more beautiful, more chosen, more agile and cleaner. My people invented everything.” Ford plans to hang it in her office.
