The much-buzzed-about portrait of Kate Moss by Lucien Freud, valued by Christie’s at between 2.5 million pounds and 3.5 million pounds, or $4.6 million and $6.5 million, sold Wednesday night in London at the high end, for 3.5 million pounds. The portrait has been owned for two years by an American collector, and the purchaser is unknown. Prior to last night, the highest price paid at auction for a Freud painting was also 3.5 million pounds, for his “Large Interior, W11” in 1998.
