NEW YORK — Family members of Carolina Herrera, Ruben Toledo, Angel Sanchez, Wilfredo Rosado and other honorees played a leading role at Vanidades magazine’s Icons of Style awards Thursday night.
As her husband Reinaldo looked on from the crowd, Herrera was presented with the Iconic Woman of Style award from her daughter Carolina who had flown in from Spain for the occasion. “Even though I have lived with her all my life, she continues to amaze me,” the designer told the crowd.

The evening’s host Lili Estefan asked the younger Carolina Herrera if it is difficult to be the designer’s daughter, she replied, “No, it’s very easy.” Her mother offered, “I love to hear that in public.”
Toledo, who was honored for fashion illustration, was also talking up his next of kin. After being honored by the actress Debi Mazar, he thanked his wife Isabel. “She has taught me everything. She has taught me about life and love and she still orders all my art supplies,” he said.
Afterward, the couple said their exhibition “Toledo/Toledo: Full Circle” bows at the MDC Museum of Art + Design in Miami in early November. They are also working on a project for Art Basel Miami, though they declined to provide details.
Angel Sanchez, the fashion design winner, said as a child in Venezuela he leafed through his mother’s copies of Vanidades, dreaming of coming to New York to work in fashion. “This award celebrates my 25 years in fashion,” he said. “My mom was my first big supporter and is still my inspiration. This award is for my mom.”
Before singing “Mack the Knife” a capella, Ruben Blades, this year’s winner for music, said he has always read Vanidades because it had absolutely no qualms about what it was about — vanity — referring to the Spanish meaning of the word. The Jewelry Design winner Wilfredo Rosado was anything but that. Having worked for Andy Warhol early on in his career and logged 23 years at Giorgio Armani, Rosado said being honored was a huge surprise. “I just started two seasons ago,” he said.
Other honorees included Emilia Fanjul for philanthropy, William Levy for Man of Style, Sara Beltran for Emerging Jewelry Design, Edmundo Castillo for Accessory Design, Gabriela Moya for Emerging Fashion Design and Marlen Esparza for Female Olympian.
There was a lull in the crowd when Estefan mentioned that this year’s Sports honoree Nacho Figueras was not able to attend the Mandarin Oriental hotel event but Levy tried to lift the mood as best he could: Accepting his award, he preferred to address the guests almost entirely in Spanish.
