Photographer Ryan McGinley’s exhibition “The Kids Are Alright” opened Friday at the Whitney Museum, making the artist the youngest to show in the photography room and giving his friends, many of whom have posed for him sullenly, drunkenly or bounding around nude, plenty to celebrate. “The way they dress reminds me of the way I looked when I was out at the flea market in the beginning,” sighed Agnès b., who hosted an after-party for the artist.
And how would McGinley describe the look of his scruffy-yet-stylish friends? He seemed stumped, but a passing pal jumped in to help. “It’s a glossy era, so we’ve got to rock something different,” he said. “If it’s dirty, it’s good. But if it’s got holes it’s even better.”
