Miss Kittin makes a push for the world stage.
Born as Caroline Herve in Grenoble, France, DJ and singer Miss Kittin has evolved from being a self-described “rave kid of the Nineties” to one of the leading voices on the electro scene, wooing clubbers the world over with her electronic, techno and pop mixes while avoiding mainstream stardom. “My music or personality aren’t that commercially exploitable,” she says. Jean Paul Gaultier might not agree — her purring vocals underscore the ad for his latest fragrance, “Ma Dame,” with model Agyness Deyn. Coupled with an 11-date North American tour in September, alongside fellow Grenoblois DJ The Hacker, which culminates in a show at New York’s Irving Plaza, Miss Kittin is emerging into one very cool cat.
WWD: How do the crowds you play to vary and which have been among your favorites?
Miss Kittin: It’s never the same, it’s never a game already won. I always need to convince people with a balance of danceable tunes that I love with some less easy ones. The more people react positively, the better you have to be, as they know your possibilities. Sometimes I play by accident in front of people who aren’t there for the music. It’s painful, but that’s where I learn the most.… Spain is my luckiest playground, as I always have to be better than the previous time. I love Japan, helping the youth to freak out in a society where the group matters more than individuals. I love France when I play for my friends, like a private party. I try to take every gig as the fi rst one, or the last one.
WWD: Has the “woman in a man’s world” stereotype often attached to female DJs been the case for you?
M.K.: The boring question….Do I have to answer that ’til I die?
WWD: Does your style reflect your music in any way?
M.K.: Possibly. Fashion isn’t for me a way to exist or defend my personality, it’s a way to feel good about myself, pretty, self-confident. I mix a lot of things. I am very good at picking cheap stuff in popular shops and making it mine so it looks expensive — my friends say. I love anything comfortable, with a girly shape and easy to pack for traveling, like short dresses, leggings. I rarely wear trousers or jeans. With my tattoos, I can be very girly and chic — it will always look edgy.
