Like an insider’s badge of honor, the Smythson of Bond Street fashion diary gets toted around to all the swankiest shows and lunch appointments in New York and Europe. So to commemorate the book’s 10th anniversary, Alexander McQueen, Zac Posen, Angela Missoni and Giambattista Valli have each designed a cover for its 2007 version. Retailing for $405, the special editions will be in Smythson’s stores in New York and London from the end of October to the end of December.
The designers gave their covers a personal touch: The Missoni zigzag is unmistakable and McQueen went wild with an animal print. While Posen doesn’t currently carry a fashion diary, he muses, “If I were to have the Zac Posen diary, I would feel like Marie Antoinette living on Beekman Place.” His design features a pink striped shirting-like look. “Something frivolous as fashion, and pretty as pink,” he says of his inspiration.
Valli, meanwhile, worked a delicate black pois d’esprit tulle against white leather for his book. A faithful fashion diary user, Valli says, “It is like my best girlfriend recording and reminding me of things.”
