“People like to talk about cross-pollination in the arts,” says Kenny Schachter, “but it rarely happens.” Of course, once the artists Schachter contacted began collaborating with the Martha Graham Dance Company, filming and photographing rehearsals, they just couldn’t stop. Alongside set pieces that Noguchi designed for the company once upon a time and relics from the Graham archives, artwork resulting from the most recent rounds of collaboration is currently being shown at Schachter’s ConTEMPorary gallery in New York.
And there’s more to come. Devon Dikeou, one of the artists included in the exhibition, was monumentally inspired and will cast an image of one of the Graham dancers in bronze for a solo show next spring. Others will make their way to the Joyce Theater, where the Martha Graham Dance Company kicks off its first New York season in four years on Tuesday. How’s that for cross-pollination?
