The first stop for many on a busy night was Tory Burch’s apartment at the Pierre, where the blonde designer was hosting a party toasting Bobbi Brown’s latest tome on the art of makeup application, “Living Beauty.”
“I met Tory through doing her shows,” explained Brown, who spent eight months working on the book, and was looking forward to a spring break trip with her children to the Bahamas.
Stopping by to toast her were Aerin and Jane Lauder, Lauren duPont, Lorraine Bracco, Vera Wang, Rena Sindi, Lillian von Stauffenberg and Burch’s former husband, Chris. Though the reception rooms were full to bursting, Burch said she didn’t mind having such a crowded house. “When you’ve got three boys, you can’t worry,” she joked.
But the guest who drew the most stares was Burch’s date, Lance Armstrong, who walked in swigging a Miller Lite and promptly got the attention of every girl in the place. Armstrong, in town for only a week, was good-natured about dealing with New York society: “I love it,” proclaimed the Texan.
That same night, there was a dinner at the Consulate Generale of India for jewelry designer Waris Ahluwalia. The place was packed, as was the cocktail party at Bergdorf Goodman that preceded it. At Ghislaine Maxwell’s Upper East Side townhouse, a buffet dinner for 60 people was the start of a two-day event extravaganza for Allegra Hicks and her new Madison Avenue store, opening today.
“We’ve been friends for 25 years,” explained Maxwell. “So I wanted to throw a small thing for her to get things started.”
Though the hostess remained calm as as she welcomed guests like Jennifer Creel, Renée Rockefeller, Amanda Brooks and Rena Sindi (who will be hosting another dinner for the designer tonight) into her vestibule and ushered them upstairs, Hicks’ business partner Pia Marocco revealed she was experiencing some nerves.
“Ghislaine said to me ‘Why did I agree to do this?’” she laughed.
