Call it devotion to a cause or loyalty to the social gods: it seems New Yorkers these days refuse to let little things like inclement weather deter their charity circuit activities. On a rain-soaked Tuesday night, the Museum of the City of New York drew a large contingent to its annual Winter Ball, this year sponsored by Asprey, 1stdibs, J. Mendel and The Plaza.

“People aren’t going to not come once they’ve spent the money on their dinner tickets,” observed one guest of the notable turnout. Whatever the reasons for their arrivals, the likes of Nina Griscom and Leonel Piraino, Christine and Steve Schwarzman, Marjorie Gubelmann, Jennifer Creel, Coralie Charriol Paul, Lisa Airan, Elise Overland and Melissa George were party ready, meandering through the ground floor galleries during cocktails.
“It’s wondeful. You know in my collection I do all of these gowns and now I get to see them on all of these beautiful ladies,” said Gilles Mendel as he took in the scene. “And it’s so New York. It’s such a rainy night and everyone still got dressed up. I love events like this. I wish there were more of them.”
Heather Mnuchin—who now spends most of the year in Los Angeles—clearly has an affection for such occasions, too: she hopped on an airplane just for the evening. “I flew in today and fly back tomorrow. Mark [Gilbertson, one of her co-chairs] is one of my closest friends, I would never miss this,” she said. After a sit down dinner spread out over the museum’s first and second floors, guests hit the dance floor with gusto until well past midnight.
