Ballet lovers were still basking in the golden glow of the Inauguration when they gathered at the San Francisco Opera House Wednesday night for the opening night gala for the San Francisco Ballet’s 76th season.
After the audience had sung a spirited ‘Star Spangled Banner’, a voice from the orchestra cheered, ‘Go Obama’, to much applause.
“The First Couple were the golden couple that night, just gorgeous” said interior designer Jean Larette.
The ‘Russian Treasures’ theme of the evening, which included dinner, a concert offering a taste of the season to come, and a Champagne-fueled after-party, was created with 20-foot tall images of Catherine the Great, grand Russian palaces, and Peter the Great projected on banners beneath the baroque rotunda of City Hall. Jewelled candelabra, uniformed trumpeters, and orchids added to the imperial mood.
Star of the gala concert, which included performances by favorites Katita Waldo, and Lorena Feijoo, was principal dancer Yuan Yuan Tan, who performed an ethereal Giselle.
Among those in the crowd were Maria Mayer, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, Alexis Traina, Lindsay Bolton, OJ Shansby, Wilkes Bashford, Charlotte Shultz, and Delphi Ventures analyst Deepa Pakianathan.
