Fashion week had an unusually civilized interruption on Thursday, when Donatella Versace hosted a ladies’ luncheon to launch her new Hit bag at her Fifth Avenue boutique.
Up in the store’s sixth-floor aerie, front-row regulars Mischa Barton, Tinsley Mortimer, Lauren duPont, Helen Schifter, Amanda Brooks and Demi Moore had a chance to sit down and have a proper bite to eat.
Not everything was prim and proper, though: Versace shared a Marlboro Red from her custom-monogrammed pack with Lauren Davis. “I am so happy you are smoking, too,” the Italian designer sighed as she lit up.
The night before, Gwen Stefani was on her best behavior as she celebrated her latest fashion show and launch of L.A.M.B.’s first scent, L Fragrance. The singer snacked on cheese and crackers with her parents while an assistant cued up Roger Federer and Andy Roddick’s U.S. Open match on television.
It was a rare moment of peace for the singer, who had prepped her collection while on tour. Luckily, she didn’t have to go far for inspiration, saying she looked to old photos of her mother. “I went back to the roots with this one,” said Stefani, ensconced in a private room at the Gramercy Park Hotel Roof Club, as friends such as Mary J. Blige, Cuba Gooding Jr., Garbage’s Shirley Manson and Angela Lindvall came to the postshow dinner hosted by In Style.
Though baby Kingston had been put to bed, he was at the runway show, where his proud papa, Gavin Rossdale, boasted, “He hit Boris Becker on the head.”
Over at the Chelsea Arts Tower, W magazine hosted a party with celebrity stylist and fledgling clothing designer Britt Bardot and her collaborator, Jewels. To cope with overcrowding, guests fanned themselves with copies of the magazine and swilled bottles of water. Jessica Simpson, a Bardot client who was dressed in the stylist’s line, Rose, deplaned a red-eye just hours before arriving at the fete. And still she managed to stay upright in her sky-high stilettos. “I support flats,” she said. “But if I wore them, I’d be two inches tall.”
Up on 39th Street, there were dozens of nearly naked boys, scores of fashion editors and a handful of supermodels celebrating Calvin Klein’s 25 years of underwear campaigns. “I don’t generally go to fashion parties, but I felt wanted here,” said the comedian Mario Cantone. “I’m sporting the Calvins.”

“Calvin should be really proud,” said Francisco Costa, who replaced Klein as designer of the women’s collection two years ago. “For 25 years, he’s been on every man’s bottom.”
Meanwhile, Bergdorf Goodman was feting Sienna and Savannah Miller’s Twenty8Twelve collection. Friends, family (including Mama Miller) and the requisite drive-by of socials stopped in to congratulate the fledgling designers, who are on a jam-packed publicity tour after opening their first freestanding store in London last week.
But the multitasking Sienna, who will start filming “Hippie Hippie Shake” with Cillian Murphy in London on Monday, already has her spring collection in the bag. “It’s inspired by the Twenties,” she offered. “And that’s all I can say.”
