The dinner Opening Ceremony threw for Peter Pilotto at Café Gitane on Wednesday was really, well, nice—and that’s not necessarily a bad thing. There was no bitchy vibe, no cooler-than-thou glares, just a bunch of people with tattoos who knew (and seemingly liked) each other. The atmosphere was a refreshing change for a downtown fete.
It’s likely that part of it was due to Pilotto and his design partner Christopher De Vos inviting several old pals from Antwerp, where they both studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, and a few new friends such as Greta Gerwig, Grace Gummer and Spike Jonze who snuck in late.

Gerwig’s not only new to Pilotto and De Vos, but to the fashion world in general. Until her turn in “Greenberg,” she’d been running in more indie circles. “This is the first fashion dinner I’ve been to,” she said. “It’s incredible. I feel like a tourist in all these amazing worlds in New York that I‘ve only ever know through magazines and art galleries, and now I actually get to talk to people. It’s really exciting.”
Which is to say, Gerwig’s nice too. Or as she saw it, “I feel like my taste in film and theater and music is, like, top shelf. I can nerd out with the best of them. But, like, fashion I’m still getting my bearings. I can’t be a jerk [about fashion] yet. But I’m learning. So one day I’ll be a jerk.”
