PRE-OSCAR CELEBRATING CONTINUES: Black leather chaise lounges and two sitar players seated on a Persian rug aren’t the usual trappings of a Beverly Hills art opening, but photographer Tierey Gearon is hardly conventional.
While the Wednesday night pre-opening dinner for her latest show, “Explosure,” at the Ace Gallery serendipitously ended up replacing Larry Gagosian’s annual show and dinner as the art event of Oscar week, the guest list was slimmer and the vibe more underground.
New York fixtures like Jean Pigozzi, Sandy Hill, Elizabeth Saltzman and Russell Simmons mingled with Hollywood art afficionados like Ben Stiller, Rosario Dawson, Roseanna Arquette and Gina Gershon.
Eastside socials Kirsty Hume, Donovan Leitch, Rosetta Getty and Brigette Romanek hung out with Westside moms Shiva Rose, Liseanne Frankfurt, Crystal Lourd and Jamie Tisch.
In the mix were also plenty of model types with names like Pali, Autumn and Lina.
“At the time when the art world is at a standstill…everyone advised me that Oscar week would be the worst time to do the show, but I took the risk. Then Larry cancelled less than a month ago. So I felt I had a huge responsibility to make this a great event,” sad Gearon.
Not only were guests ready to get out their purses and buy the oversized, double-exposure photos (“How much are they?” inquired Pigozzi), they lingered to nibble on peach cobbler and people watch.
“This was my attempt to look cool and now I feel hopelessly uncool,” lamented Tisch as she glanced at the groups of disheveled models lounging around the gallery. “I feel too well-groomed.”
